A Look Back: 2007 NCAA Men's Tournament Results

2007 NCAA men's tournament results show that the tourney played out in similar fashion to most of the tourneys since the field expanded to 64 teams back in 1985. There was no George Mason in 2007. In the end the top seeds made their way into the Elite Eight and ultimately the Final Four and Championship Game. Before breaking down the 2007 NCAA men's tournament results, let's take a look at how teams finished the 2006-2007 regular season and how the conference tournaments panned out prior to the Big Dance.

Atlantic Coast Conference - The ACC featured Virginia and North Carolina tied at the top in conference standings with 11-5 records. Boston College, Virginia Tech, and Maryland were at 10-6 while Georgia Tech and Duke followed at 8-8. In the ACC conference tournament number 1 seeded North Carolina beat the surprising 10th seed Wolfpack of North Carolina State 89-80.
Heading into the 2007 NCAA men's tournament North Carolina was one of the favorites to win it all.

Big East Conference - The final Big East standings had Georgetown at the top at 13-3 with league contenders Pittsburgh and Louisville at 12-4. The Big East conference tourney finished up with Georgetown handling Pittsburgh 65-42 in the championship game. Following that convincing victory Georgetown was expected to make a run in the 2007 NCAA basketball tournament.

Big Ten Conference - Ohio State and Wisconsin were the cream of the crop in the Big Ten with 15-1 and 13-3 records respectively. Not surprisingly those are the two teams that played for the Big Ten tourney championship with Ohio State prevailing 66-49. Ohio State was considered one of the top contenders leading up to the 2007 NCAA men's tournament.

Big 12 Conference - Kansas(14-2), Texas A&M(13-3), and Texas(12-4) with Kevin Durant were the teams to watch coming out of the Big 12. Kansas slipped past Texas 88-84 in overtime of the Big 12 tourney championship game. The Jayhawks, Aggies, and Longhorns were all expected to make noise in the 2007 NCAA men's tournament.

Pac-10 Conference - UCLA topped the Pac-10 at 15-3 followed by Washington State at 13-5 and Arizona, USC, and Oregon at 11-7. UCLA was upset by 8th seeded California in the Pac-10 tourney quarterfinals. Oregon beat USC 81-57 in the Pac-10 tourney championship. UCLA and Oregon were the two teams garnering the most attention heading into the 2007 NCAA men's tournament.

Southeastern Conference - The best of the SEC included the defending national champion Florida Gators(13-3) along with Vanderbilt(10-6) and Tennessee(10-6). Florida cruised through the SEC tourney taking out Arkansas 77-56 in the championship game. Florida appeared determined to defend their national title with the 2007 NCAA men's tournament on the horizon.

Mid-Majors to Watch - Memphis can hardly be considered a mid-major in the world of college basketball, but nonetheless they do reside in Conference USA which is generally regarded as a lesser league compared to the six traditional major conferences. Memphis went 14-0 in league play and had no problem winning the C-USA tourney. The Tigers were expected to go deep into the 2007 NCAA men's tournament.

Who was going to be the George Mason of 2007? That was the question on everyone's minds as anticipation of the Big Dance increased. The most likely candidates seemed to be Winthrop, Southern Illinois, and Butler who all showed they could hang with major conference teams via their respective non-league schedules.

Pre-Tournament Summary - North Carolina, Ohio State, Florida, Kansas, Georgetown, Memphis, Wisconsin, Texas A&M, Oregon, and Texas were the consensus top contenders after the tournament brackets were announced. Potential mid-major contention included Winthrop(11 seed in the Midwest), Southern Illinois(4 seed in the West), and Butler(5 seed in the Midwest).

2007 NCAA Men's Tournament Results - The first round of the tournament saw very few upsets take place. The higher seeds went 28-4 in the first round. Purdue(9 seed) beat 8th seeded Arizona. Xavier(9 seed) beat 8th seeded BYU. Winthrop(11 seed) beat 6th seeded Notre Dame. VCU(11 seed) beat 6th seeded Duke.

The second round was more interesting with three number 5 seeds beating number 4 seeds. More importantly we saw UNLV(7 seed) take out 2nd seeded Wisconsin and Vanderbilt(6 seed) beat 3rd seeded Washington State. Texas was one of the number 4 seeds to bow out in the second round.

The higher seed won every game in the Sweet Sixteen round of the 2007 NCAA men's tournament. That meant the Elite Eight consisted of four #1 seeds, three #2 seeds, and one #3 seed. Eight of the ten projected top contenders were in fact still in the tournament. Florida(1 seed in the Midwest) faced UCLA(2 seed in the West) in the Final Four while Ohio State(1 seed in the South) took on Georgetown(2 seed in the East). The 2007 NCAA men's tournament culminated with Florida beating Ohio State 84-75 in the national championship game. Florida became the first school to repeat as national champs since Duke did it in 1991 and 1992.
