March Madness Bracket Tips: Focusing on the Championship Game

Before you pick a champion for your NCAA tourney bracket, consider the following March Madness bracket tips including the teams, players, and results for the last seven national championship games. National championship teams are typically athletic, have one or more NBA-caliber players, have solid depth on the bench, rebound well, have a strong presence in the post(scoring and shot blocking), and have accurate three point shooters.

March Madness Bracket Tips: 2000 thru 2007 Title Games
2000 - Michigan State 89 Florida 76
Throughout the tournament Michigan State had Mateen Cleaves, Morris Petersen, and Charlie Bell leading the way with solid support from A.J. Granger, Andre Hutson, and Jason Richardson. The Gators were anchored by Mike Miller and Udonis Haslem.
2001 - Maryland 64 Indiana 52
Maryland was led by Juan Dixon and Lonny Baxter while Indiana had Big Ten Player of the Year Jared Jeffries. Indiana used Jeffries' inside presence and hot shooting from behind the arc to reach the championship game. Maryland was a well-rounded athletic team that could score both inside and outside the paint.

2002 - Duke 82 Arizona 72
Duke was loaded with Shane Battier, Jason Williams, Carlos Boozer, Mike Dunleavy, and Chris Duhon. Arizona was led by Gilbert Arenas, Richard Jefferson, and Loren Woods.

2003 - Syracuse 81 Kansas 78
Syracuse touted Carmelo Anthony, Hakim Warrick, and Gerry McNamara while Kansas had Kirk Heinrich and Nick Collison.

2004 - Connecticut 82 Georgia Tech 73
UConn was the favorite with Emeka Okafor, Ben Gordon, Rashad Anderson, and Josh Boone in the starting lineup plus Charlie Villanueva coming off the bench. Georgia Tech had Jarret Jack, B.J. Elder, and Luke Schenscher.

2005 - North Carolina 75 Illinois 70
An excellent matchup with North Carolina touting Sean May, Raymond Felton, and Rashad McCants. Illinois was led by Dee Brown, Deron Williams, and Luther Head.

2006 - Florida 73 UCLA 57
Youthful Florida won it all with Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer, Al Horford, Taurean Green, and Lee Humphrey. Jordan Farmar helped lead the Bruins into the title game.


2007 - Florida 84 Ohio State 75 - Once again Florida won it all with Noah, Brewer, Horford, Green, and Humphrey. Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. led the Buckeyes to the national championship game where they fell to the Gators.
