NCAA Basketball Tournament Picks: South Region Predictions

Let's take a look at my NCAA basketball tournament picks for the South region of the March Madness bracket. I rate the South region as the toughest just ahead of the Midwest region. I look at some of the 1st round matchups and the potential 2nd round and Sweet 16 matchups and it's going to be a tough path to the Final Four for whoever comes out of the South region. Memphis only has one loss but they play in C-USA, Pitt was great in the Big East tourney, Texas has played well all year, and Stanford has been ranked in or near the top 10 for quite some time. Let's get to my NCAA basketball tournament picks:

1st Round NCAA Basketball Tournament Picks - South Region
I'm advancing the top 4 seeds into the second round without any second-guessing. Oregon vs Mississippi State is a toss-up but I'm going with the Ducks since they beat Stanford, Arizona(twice), and Kansas State. Mississippi State's best wins were over
Kentucky and Arkansas. Slight edge to Oregon.

Michigan State vs Temple - I'm picking the Spartans but this game has the potential to go the other way. MSU can struggle on offense at times and Temple is a good 3-point shooting team(plus they take a lot of 3's).

Marquette vs Kentucky - I'm taking Marquette in a tight game. I'm basing that on Marquette looking more impressive when I've watched them as opposed to the way Kentucky has looked. The Wildcats losing to Georgia helped sway my pick to Marquette in this one.

Miami Fla vs St. Mary's - I initially thought I'd take St. Mary's in this game but after comparing the scedules of the two teams I've decided to pick Miami who has beaten Duke, Clemson, and Mississippi State.

2nd Round NCAA Basketball Tournament Picks - South Region
In the second round of the South region I have Memphis vs Oregon, Michigan State vs Pitt, Marquette vs Stanford, and Miami Fla vs Texas. I'm advancing Texas because it would be a pretty big upset if the Longhorns lost to Miami in the second round. I have Memphis over Oregon but I wouldn't be surprised if the Ducks make things interesting. Pittsburgh has won 7 of their last 8 games including victories over Louisville, Marquette, and Georgetown to win the Big East tournament. They're playing great basketball right now while Michigan State has been up and down since January. I'm taking the Panthers. I think Stanford would have their hands full with Marquette but would eventually wear down the Golden Eagles and get the win.

Sweet 16 NCAA Basketball Tournament Picks - South Region
In the Sweet 16 round of the South region I have Memphis vs Pittsburgh and Stanford vs Texas. I really like the way Pitt played in the Big East tournament and I'm picking them to upset Memphis. Pitt also beat Duke and Georgetown earlier in the season. It's hard to gage how good Memphis really is as they haven't had a quality win since December(USC, Georgetown, and Arizona) due to their C-USA schedule and the fact they lost at home to Tennessee on Feb 23. I like the way Texas has played all year as their victories include Kansas, Tennessee, and UCLA. Stanford lacks a big non-conference win and they lost to UCLA 3 times. Longhorns over the Cardinal.

Elite 8 NCAA Basketball Tournament Picks - South Region
I have Pitt and Texas in the Elite 8 and it's a matchup that could go either way. I'm picking Texas because they have been more consistent throughout the season in collecting quality wins. In my mind having victories over Kansas, Tennessee, and UCLA boosts the Longhorn's resume over the current hot streak Pitt is on.

Final Four NCAA Basketball Tournament Picks - South vs West
In the Final Four I have Texas facing UCLA from the West region in another matchup that could easily go either way. As I mentioned above, Texas beat UCLA earlier in the season. However I think UCLA is better now than they were at the beginning of the year and the Collison - Love combination will knock the Longhorns out.

I have UCLA beating North Carolina is the national championship game. The Bruins find ways to win and they were impressive all season long including the Pac-10 tournament. Collison and Love versus Lawson and Hansbrough. The national championship game usually features future NBA players and I predict this one will be no different. UCLA finds a way to beat North Carolina for the title.
