NCAA March Madness Picks: Midwest Region Bracket Predictions

Let's take a look at my NCAA March Madness picks for the Midwest region of the NCAA men's basketball tournament. I rate the Midwest region as the second strongest behind only the South region. Three years ago Kansas got upset in the first round as a number 3 seed. Two years ago they got upset in the first round as a number 4 seed. Last season the Jayhawks lost in the Elite 8 to UCLA. This year Kansas is better and has the number 1 seed. Will this be the year the Jayhawks get back to the Final Four? They have a tough road with potential matchups against UNLV, Clemson or Vanderbilt, and then Georgetown, Wisconsin, or USC. Let's get to my NCAA March Madness picks:

First Round NCAA March Madness Picks - Midwest Region
I'm advancing the top 4 seeds into the second round without any second-guessing. I'm also taking the 5 seed Clemson based on their solid ACC tournament run. Clemson vs Villanova has upset
potential written on it but the Tigers just got done beating Duke and then played North Carolina tough for the 3rd time this year.

UNLV vs Kent St - Toss up game. I'm going with UNLV as I did watch part of the Mountain West tourney championship where the Runnin' Rebels handled BYU in decisive fashion.

USC vs Kansas St - What a great first round matchup with O.J. Mayo and the Trojans facing Micheal Beasley and the Kansas State Wildcats. Certainly a game where some will pick the upset. I'm rolling with 6th seeded USC as they beat UCLA, Stanford, and Arizona plus played Kansas and Memphis close. Kansas State lost 6 of their last 9 games.

Gonzaga vs Davidson - I picked Gonzaga to win in the first round last year and got burned. I'm going to give Davidson and their 22-game win streak a shot. Wildcats over the Zags.

Second Round NCAA March Madness Picks - Midwest Region
In the second round of the Midwest region I have Kansas vs UNLV, Clemson vs Vanderbilt, USC vs Wisconsin, and Davidson vs Georgetown. I'm advancing Kansas and Georgetown as it would be a major upset if either one of them lost in the second round. Clemson vs Vandy and USC vs Wisconsin are both toss-ups in my mind. I'm picking Clemson over Vanderbilt. Clemson was hot in the ACC tourney while Vandy has lost 3 of their last 5 games. I'm also picking an upset with USC taking out Wisconsin. I didn't think the Badgers looked that great in the Big Ten tourney where they were somewhat fortunate to get past Michigan State in the semifinals. Wisconsin does struggle on offense at times. The Badgers bowed out to UNLV in the second round last year as a number 2 seed. USC has showed the ability to hang with and beat top 25 teams all year. I'm going with the Trojans.

Sweet 16 Round NCAA March Madness Picks - Midwest Region
In the Sweet 16 round of the Midwest region I have Kansas vs Clemson and USC vs Georgetown. Two excellent matchups and big-time challenges for the number 1 and 2 seeds. I think Kansas vs Clemson would be a shootout with the Jayhawks prevailing at the end. I think USC vs Georgetown would be a tough, grind it out game with Roy Hibbert being the difference. Jayhawks and Hoyas move on.

Elite 8 Round NCAA March Madness Picks - Midwest Region
So I have Kansas and Georgetown in the Elite 8 and I have a real tough time deciding who would win that game. Therefore I'm going to lean on recent history a little bit and pick the Hoyas because last year they beat North Carolina to advance to the Final Four while Kansas lost to UCLA in the Elite 8.

Final Four Round NCAA March Madness Picks - Midwest vs East
In the Final Four I have Georgetown facing North Carolina from the East region and such a matchup could really go either way. I'm picking North Carolina largely because they won the ACC tournament and Georgetown failed to beat Pittsburgh in the Big East tourney final. Hibbert vs Hansbrough would be a heck of a matchup if these two teams do in fact make it to the Final Four.

I have UCLA beating North Carolina in the national championship game. The Bruins find ways to win and they were impressive all season long including the Pac-10 tournament. Collison and Love versus Lawson and Hansbrough. The national championship game usually features future NBA players and I predict this one will be no different. UCLA finds a way to beat North Carolina for the title.
